Garage Door Locks Versus Keyless Entry Systems
It may simply be a question of not understanding the various available styles of garage door locks available. But, when it concerns garage door locks, there's more to think about than what simply meets the eyes. In reality, these can differ quite significantly. And if you don't take the time to understand the various styles, you may be leaving yourself wide open to having problems with your door lock or, worse, your home itself! That said, there are some fundamental differences that can help us make sense of the problem.
One distinction between the various styles of garage door locks and their corresponding security systems is in regard to the "soft" issues. This term refers to the spring-loaded mechanism used to operate the locking mechanism. While most of the time it's operated by a "soft key", the technical term for this is a "torsion spring". Essentially, torsion springs are used because they provide the user with a greater degree of security. Because the torsion spring has two coils, it provides twice the amount of tensile force that a hard key is capable of. This results in greater security for the home, as well as greater security from the elements.
Then, there's the mechanical issue. The "manual locks" on the other hand are simply the traditional, old-fashioned type of locking mechanism. These manual locks have one advantage - they are less complicated than the more modern garage door locks and also provide the user with more security.
The most common type of garage door locks and keyless locks are the two that can be opened by a standard key. However, there exists another option that provides security, yet doesn't rely on a key to operate: wireless remote entry. A wireless remote entry system offers users greater security but doesn't rely on a key for access. Instead, it operates by means of a cellular or wireless transceiver device and a password or biometric access code. The door opens by means of an electronic signal sent from the device, which the user controls.
Keyless entry systems come in two varieties, those that use electronic locks and those that use a combination of overhead door and slide locks. With overhead door openers, there is no need to worry about losing the key or making a mistake when using the device. For added security, a remote access system can be installed to allow you to disarm and unlock the door from a central station without needing to use your key.
The good news is that the trend toward these types of garage doors and keyless entry systems is not limited to residential homes. Commercial buildings and upscale homes are making the transition to keyless entry systems as well. The benefits of these types of systems make them well worth the investment. No more worrying about lost keys or forgetting to change the combination - with these types of systems, you have the convenience of a traditional keyed system, but without the risk of unauthorized access. That makes a great deal of sense!
